The Middle Ages, the 700-year-long "Dark Age" between the Roman Empire and the beginning of the modern era, had, alongside its dark side, numerous facets in which a colorful artistic life existed. Singing, dancing and celebrations took place not only at court, but also in the cities and in the countryside. In the monasteries, various forms of vocal polyphony developed, starting with the monophonic Gregorian chant. The musicians of the Middle Ages were either court musicians or wandering journeymen who set up camp wherever their services were accepted. Today, the Middle Ages are experiencing an unprecedented renaissance, which can be admired both at medieval spectacles and at concerts by friends of "early music".
